Frequently Asked Questions
What is a dermatologist?
Dermatologists are physicians who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the skin, hair, and nails. After four years of medical school, they have to complete a one year internship. Then they spend three years of specialty training in dermatology. In order to become board-certified by the American Board of Dermatology, they must pass a rigorous two part examination at the end of their training.
Who needs a dermatologist?
Dermatologists can help patients of all ages with their skin care needs. Dr. Nguyen can manage a wide range of pediatric conditions such as acne, eczema, warts and birthmarks. He can treat adults with acute conditions such as poison ivy and shingles as well as treating more chronic conditions like psoriasis.
Dr. Nguyen recommends a full body exam for patients with a history of skin cancer or a family history of skin cancer. In addition, patients with many moles and patients with a history of sunburns should also have a full body exam. These patients should be seen at least once a year.
